Australian Test captain Pat Cummins’ heroic late 44 runs took his team to a first Test victory at Edgbaston – one that he celebrated by embracing his father minutes after the winning runs were scored. Needing 281 to win, Australia were on the brink of losing with only two of their wickets remaining and 51 runs required at one point.

In March, Cummins had to cut short his tour to India after he found out that his mother had passed away due to breast cancer. Cummins had flown back to be by her side.

The Cummins family has been known to follow their son’s cricketing journey throughout the world. Later after the match, the Australian captain spoke about how he felt lucky that his father and brother were there at Edgbaston to watch and support him.

“It was really special, Dad has been here all week and I just feel lucky to have him here,” Cummins said. “It’s been a tough few months. My brother has been here all week as well. Dad was here in 2019 with Mum. Having him here was just really special.”

Cummins also spoke about how he and his father ended up going to watch Bruce Springsteen at the end of the first day of the Birmingham Test. He ended up missing the opening bit of the musician’s set list at Villa Park.

“Dad was here in 2019 with Mum, so having him here was really special. I went with him to see Bruce Springsteen (at Villa Park) on the first night as well. I missed the first 20 minutes, but he put on a show like he always does, The Boss,” said Cummins.
