Late monsoon: 67 villages in three Pune talukas depend on tankers

Officials said that usually by the end of June, demand for tankers reduces with the onset of monsoon, which generally occurs around June 7. This year, however, demand has increased in June as compared with previous months of summer.

Officials with Pune Zilla Parishad (ZP)said that tankers have been deployed by authorities to supply water to 67 villages in three talukas – Ambegaon, Junnar and Khed. These tankers cumulatively make an average of 136 trips per day. Ambegaon taluka has the highest number of water tanker-dependent villages at 16, followed by Khed (13) and Junnar (10).

Speaking on why demand for tankers has increased, Mane MD, a ZP official, said the monsoon is delayed and decreased water levels in wells and dams. “Demands have decreased as compared with the previous year, the department is doing better this year. As soon as the monsoon arrives, water will fill the catchment,” he said.

As per the data provided by an official for last year June 16, a total of 66 tankers were deployed in 308 hamlets of 59 villages. This indicates a decrease in the number of tankers in comparison with the current year’s 44 tankers. But, the number of villages which demanded water went up this year to 67.
