Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Tuesday addressed a public meeting at Tambaram in Chennai as a part of a programme aimed at reaching out to the people on completion of the nine years of the Narendra Modi-led government in the Centre.

At the Chennai airport, Singh was welcomed by Tamil Nadu state BJP president K Annamalai and other party functionaries.

Speaking at the event, the Defence Minister slammed Chief Minister M K Stalin for “duplicity of character” over the arrest of Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji in a cash for job scam by the Enforcement Directorate.

“My friend Stalin has been criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and investigating agencies over the arrest of his cabinet minister Senthil Balaji. Balaji has been arrested in a corruption case and Stalin himself had earlier called Balaji corrupt when he was in AIADMK and demanded his arrest. Now when his demand is met, he calls it political vendetta. This duplicity of character is unacceptable,” Singh said.

Referring to the recent arrest of BJP state secretary S G Suryah over a tweet, Singh said it was anti-democratic and anti-constitutional and wondered if Stalin took his namesake Joseph Stalin (Former Premier of the Soviet Union) too seriously and is putting the spirit of democracy in danger.

“I want to appeal to all political parties in Tamil Nadu, democracy should thrive,” he said.

Amid the ongoing tension between allies BJP and AIADMK here, Singh claimed all is well between them and noted that they will never forget how AIADMK supremo late J Jayalalithaa supported the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to assume power in Centre.

“We value our alliance partners, because NDA is not a compulsion but a commitment,” he said.

Earlier while speaking at the event, Singh apologised for not knowing Tamil, the oldest and most beautiful language in the world, and noted he is proud as a Defence Minister to be in the land of great warriors like Raja Raja Chola and Rajendra Chola. He also listed down the various initiatives of the Union government taken for the welfare of Tamils here as well as in neighbouring Sri Lanka.
