Even as heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in parts of the northern and eastern districts of Telangana Tuesday, the good news is that the Southwest Monsoon has progressed further to cover parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The rain clouds are expected to move in further to enter Telangana as, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), “conditions are favourable for further advancement of southwest monsoon over some more parts of peninsular India in the next two to three days”.

IMD’s Hyderabad centre has predicted light to moderate rains or thundershowers as very likely over isolated parts of the state. It has issued a code yellow warning for the next five days as thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected at isolated places. “This is not because of monsoons. It is the convective activity in the evenings due to the rising day temperatures as low-level north-westerlies continue to prevail over the state. This is nothing unusual. We are expecting the wind flow pattern to change to westerlies on Tuesday causing good rainfall Wednesday and Thursday,” A Sravani, scientist-C at IMD-Hyderabad, told indianexpress.com.

On Monday, the state-run TSDPS (Telangana State Development Planning Society with its 1,044 automated weather stations across the state) recorded the highest maximum temperature of 44.2 degrees Celsius was recorded at Munagala in Suryapet district. Several locations in districts such as Bhadradri Kothagudem, Peddapalli, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Nalgonda, Khammam, Karimnagar, Mahbubabad, and Nirmal recorded temperature levels above 40 degrees Celsius.

The prevailing heatwave scenario is caused due to the delay in the onset of monsoon and the setting of a heat trough in the north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The southwest monsoon, which was late by 8 days in reaching the Kerala coast, usually takes 10 more days to reach Telangana. As parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh have started receiving rainfall already, the southwest monsoon clouds are expected to arrive here in Telangana by June 22 and cover the entire state by June 26-27.

Former Deputy Director General of the IMD, YV Rama Rao, who works with TSDPS, told indianexpress.com that Telangana will receive rainfall for four to five days starting June 24 but it would not be heavy rainfall. Despite the late onset, Telangana can expect normal rainfall this year. Last year, Telangana recorded an excess of over 50 per cent rainfall during the southwest monsoon season.

“Most models are showing a normal rainfall for July and August, which are the main rainfall months. We can expect good rains, which may be about 10 per cent deficient. Unless there are low-pressure or depression systems in the Bay of Bengal, there won’t be heavy rainfall events like in previous years. Factors such as El Nino is a problem but that may have an impact in September-October only. The good thing is Indian Ocean Dipole is showing some positive signals,” said Rama Rao. The rainfall may be below normal in June but that deficiency will be covered with good rainfall in July and August to bring the overall monsoon rainfall figures to normal.

Telangana’s normal rainfall during southwest monsoon is 738.6 mm. With the delay in the onset of the monsoon, the rainfall for June (as of June 20) is already deficient with a deviation of 82 per cent. This year, the IMD has predicted the southwest monsoon to be normal over north and central districts and below normal over southern districts such as Mahabubnagar, Narayanpet, Jogulamba Gadwal, Nagarkurnool, and Wanaparthy districts.
