Although show business may present itself as glamorous on the surface, the truth behind it may not always align with this common perception. Revealing one such ‘not-so-attractive’ part of the same, Adele recently told her fans that during her Las Vegas show over the weekend that she had developed ‘jock itch’ for sweating onstage in her Spanx.

“Face is sweating. My tits are sweating. I sweat a lot, and it doesn’t go anywhere, so I basically am just sitting in my own sweat, so my doctor diagnosed me with jock itch,” she said. “Jock itch, that sounds like I’m a big Nuggets fan, doesn’t it? It looks like I’m a big athlete, right?”

The singer further said that she has to squirt it on herself. “I don’t know why the f**k I just told you that. And some trashy British paper is going to write about it, ‘Adele’s got body acne‘,” Adele said.

EExplaining what ‘jock itch’ is, Dr Rinky Kapoor, Consultant Dermatologist, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Dermato-Surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, shared that it is a fungal skin infection, leading to itchy rashes in warm and moist parts of the body.

“The rash is commonly seen in the groin and inner thighs and can be present in the shape of a ring. It is a contagious infection and requires timely medical intervention. it is very common in diabetics and those with thyroid,” she said.

Dr Vijay Singhal, Senior Consultant, Dermatology at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute said that it is also known as tinea cruris and is a fungal infection that affects the groin area. “It is characterised by a red, itchy rash that can spread to the inner thighs, buttocks and genitals,” he said.

He said that it is caused by a type of fungus called dermatophytes. “These fungi thrive in warm and moist environments, making the groin area an ideal breeding ground. Factors such as excessive sweating, tight clothing, poor hygiene and compromised immune system can contribute to its development.”

Not just that, one can get jock itch through sexual contact with an infected person or even by sharing towels or clothing with an infected person, Dr Kapoor said.

Taking these causes into account, experts suggest staying dry and keeping all the body parts clean. “Use a clean towel to dry the body parts well. Wear clean clothes and change the undergarments twice a day. It is a strict no-no to share personal items with anyone. Wear loose-fitted cotton clothes instead of tighter ones. Take a shower twice a day and use products approved by the doctor,” Dr Kapoor said.

As for the treatment, it usually involves antifungal creams or sprays, as prescribed by a dermatologist. “These medications should be applied to the affected area as directed until the rash resolves. It is important to continue the treatment for the recommended duration, even if the symptoms subside. If the condition does not improve or worsens, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and treatment,” Dr Singhal said.

Additionally, Dr Kapoor advised against scratching your groin or using any chemical products without the knowledge of the doctor. “Scratching your groin may cause the fungus to spread to other areas of the body. It is the need of the hour to maintain good personal hygiene and take utmost care of yourself. Do not take the jock itch lightly at all as your condition may worsen if not tackled at the right time. Also, if not properly treated, it can cause resistance and the problem may not respond to normal antifungal treatments,” she explained.
