Sensex hits fresh record high led by gains in index heavyweights

BSE benchmark Sensex on Wednesday hit its all-time high after rising 260 points led by gains in index heavyweights Reliance Industries, HDFC twins. The rally comes ahead of US Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s testimony before Congress.

The S&P BSE benchmark rallied 260.61 points, or 0.41 per cent to touch its all-time peak of 63,588.31. Sensex rallied to its fresh high after contribution by Reliance, HDFC twins — HDFC, HDFC Bank — L&T, and Hindustan Unilever.

On the other hand, NSE’s barometer Nifty50 was trading 32 points, or 0.17 per cent higher at 18,848.70 , over 30 points shy of its record high.

In the Sensex heatmap, PowerGrid, L&T, Hindustan Unilever, Wipro, Reliance, HDFC Bank, Tech Mahindra and HDFC were the top gainers. However, Tata Motors, Tata Steel, Sun Pharma, Axis Bank, Asian Paints and Bajaj Finance were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Shriram Finance and Piramal Enterprises opened at 10 per cent upper circuit limits after the later said it sold its entire 8.34 per cent stake in the former via block deals.

Sectorally, only media, pharma and healthcare indices were trading in red at the time of writing, as the Nifty Media was up 2.31 per cent, Nifty Financial Services was up 0.96 per cent, and Nifty Consumer Durables was up 0.48 per cent.
